Movie: The Golden Compass
Description:
The Golden Compass is a 2007 fantasy adventure film based on Northern Lights, the first novel in Philip Pullman’s trilogy His Dark Materials. The film depicts the adventures of Lyra Belacqua fighting against a powerful church called the Magisterium which opposes free inquiry. An interesting aspect of the world in which this story takes place is that part of the spirit of a person resides externally as an animal companion called a dæmon. As a source of intelligent will and empowerment, the Magisterium seeks to separate the dæmon from the human in order to deepen their social control.
